Pick a size
Measured in studs across. 48 wide is the LEGO Art wall-piece standard and the sweet spot for faces; 32 suits bold logos; 64+ is for the ambitious.
Pick a color set
The full 24-color palette gives the truest picture. The grayscale set makes any portrait look deliberate — and gray 1×1 plates are cheap and easy to buy in bulk.

Actually building it
The piece to buy is the 1×1 plate (or 1×1 round tile if you like the smoother "dot" look LEGO Art sets use). Order loose pieces by color from LEGO Pick a Brick or BrickLink — the counts panel above is literally your shopping list. A 48×48 mosaic is 2,304 pieces and typically lands somewhere between $40 and $90 depending on how exotic your colors are.
Base it on four 16×16 baseplates or one 48×48. Work top-left to bottom-right with the grid export on a second screen, one row at a time. Zip-lock bag each color before you start; future-you says thanks.
Portrait tips: crop tight on the face before converting — mosaics reward big shapes. High-contrast photos with a plain background convert dramatically better than busy ones. If the result looks muddy, try the grayscale palette; it reads as intentional art instead of a compromised photo.
